President Alexander Stubb on Tuesday reiterated to continue Finland´s support for Ukraine as long as needed.

Speaking at a Gala dinner in honour of the King and Queen of Denmark at the Presidential Palace, he also said that the new administration in the United States is redefining transatlantic relationship.

Danish King Frederik X and Queen Mary are on a state visit to Finland from March 4 to 5, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation within NATO.

“As friends, it is vital that we support our friends in Ukraine for as long as it takes,” said Stubb.

He also said Ukraine is not just fighting for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity – it is also fighting for Europe, the free world and the liberal world order.

“We in Finland and Denmark understand exactly what it means when a great power attacks a smaller country,” said the President.

He said that during their first year as heads of state of Denmark and Finland, the world has changed more than in the past thirty years combined.

“Just over thirty years ago, when the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed, there was hope for a brighter future. Today, we mostly see dark clouds gathering,” Stubb said.

Pointing out the unrest in Europe and the Middle East, the President underscored the need for friends now more than ever.

“We live in a time of unrest, with war in Europe and the Middle East, and a new administration in the United States that is redefining our transatlantic relationship,” Stubb added.

Earlier on the day, Stubb had a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy and discussed the situation in Ukraine after the Summit in London on Sunday.

Finland will continue to support Ukraine and work for a lasting and just peace, said the President Office in a press release.

“I had a productive call with the President of Finland Alexander Stubb. As always, full understanding and absolute support,” Zelenskyy wrote in a post on his social media platform X after the telephone conversation.

“After our meeting at the summit in London, we continue working with our partners on a joint plan for achieving guaranteed peace. Concrete steps, clear positions, and a shared vision are crucial foundations for ending this war,” he added.

He also wrote that Finland is making great efforts towards establishing a honest peace.

“We have aligned our plans for the near future and coordinated our priorities. Peace must become our shared success – Ukraine, the U.S., and all of Europe,” wrote the Ukrainian President in his post.
