The police are investigating into the incident of death of a minor child in a daycare centre in Pyhäjoki, a municipality under the Northern Ostrobothnia region on April 1, said police in a press release on Wednesday.

The Oulu police on Wednesday said that they decided to continue the investigation as a criminal case.

A leading Finnish language evening tabloid Ilta-Sanomat, quoting Detective Inspector Minna Vuori, reported that the case will be investigated under criminal code of murder, but the charges could be changed based on the results of the investigation.

The inspector, however, did not divulge the number of suspects in the case, said the Ilta-Sanomat report.

Police said that the criminal investigation initiated as it is important to clarify the incident but did not disclose the identity of the deceased and detail information about the death.

Police will interview the respective people and investigate the operating system of the daycare centre.

It will take several months to complete the preliminary investigation, said police.
