Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday night congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his being elected the president of France, saying the French decided for cooperation in Europe.

“Congratulations @ Emmanuel Macron. The French decided for cooperation in Europe. Looking forward to our cooperation in the European Council,” said Sipilä, also the chairman of Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) in Finland, in a Twitter message congratulating the newly elected president of France.

Centrist candidate Macron won Sunday’s runoff vote of the French presidential election, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen, according to polling agency projections issued after the vote.

An estimation made by the research firm Elabe for BFMTV shows that Macron won the presidential race with 65.9 per cent of votes, while Le Pen scored 34.1 per cent.
