55 years old people become biggest age group in Q3

People born in 1963 have become the biggest age group in county´s population during the third quarter, according to Statistics Finland.

At the end of September, 75,223 of them were living permanently in Finland. The second biggest age group was those born in 1948, whose number in the population was 75,087 at the end of September.

Before this, persons born in 1948 have formed the biggest age group in Finland continuously since 1996.

Finland's population at the end of September was 5,520,535. Over the January to September period, Finland's population increased by 7,405 persons, which is 4,141 lower than in the corresponding period of last year.

The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 11,525 higher than that of emigrants. The excess of births was negative as the number of births was 4,120 lower than that of deaths.

According to the preliminary statistics for January-September 2018, a total of 36,176 children were born, which is 2,039 fewer than in the corresponding period 2017. The number of deaths was 40,296, which is 52 higher than one year earlier.

Altogether 23,735 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 12,210 persons emigrated from Finland during January-September period. The number of immigrants was 508 lower and the number of emigrants 1,542 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 6,788 of the immigrants and 8,207 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 223,718 by the end of September. Compared with the previous year, the decrease was 1,694 migrations according to the municipal division of 2018.

Same-sex marriages took legal effect in March 2017. A total of 169 women and 90 men entered into marriage in which the spouse was of the same sex during January-September period in 2018. In all, 134 women and 70 men changed their registered partnership into marriage.
