The Finnish Red Cross-SPR coordinated week against racism will be marked on 18-24 March.

During the week SPR will confer recognition to communities, businesses and individual who work towards curtailing prejudice and promoting equality, said the organisation in a statement.

"We want to remind different communities such as work places, municipalities and decision makers to treat everyone equally. Non-discriminatory choices and measures improve the quality of life for everyone," said Janette Grönfors, anti-racist expert at SPR.

The basic role of the Red Cross based on the law and decree is to help all those in vulnerable situations, defend human dignity and human rights.

Racist behaviour is discrimination in which people are placed in an unequal position on the basis of their background or on the basis of assumed attributes.

The Red Cross speaks and acts on behalf of a pluralistic and equal society where everyone has equal opportunities to act and influence.
