The police intensified traffic surveillance in a nationwide campaign last week, said the police in a bulletin.
The police found a large number of passengers riding in the front and back seats of vehicles without using seat belts. A total of 1,278 passengers were found riding in the front seats without seat belts, and 114 others in the back seats.
Drivers using mobile phones without hands free devices were also caught during the operation. A total of 740 drivers were nabbed driving while using the mobile phones without hands free devices.
A total of 72 fines were imposed on drivers for non-compliance with the traffic safety rules.
Police inspector Heikki Kallio from the National Police Board emphasised the importance of using safety belts.
According to Kallio, seat belts saves lives during accident, and no one can be certain that such a situation can arise because of one's own fault or another person's incorrect assessment.
