Italian Fabio Fognini captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in Monte-Carlo Masters final on Sunday.
Seeded 13th, Fognini is the lowest-seeded player to claim the title since Gustavo Kuerten in 1999, and the first Italian to win at Monte-Carlo since Nicola Pietrangeli in 1968. He will rise to a career-high No. 12 when the latest ATP Rankings are published on Monday.
Following stunning victories over top-5 players Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal, Fognini bagged the opening set victory in 44 minutes and had a medical timeout for right thigh treatment after the fifth game of the second set.
However, that didn't prevent his journey to the title. He converted his second match point as Lajovic mistimed a forehand return.
