Sjostrom biggest winner with 4 golds in FINA Champions Series

With four trophies, Sarah Sjostrom Sweden became the biggest winner while Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu of Hungary bagged three golds as the first leg of FINA Champions Series concluded here on Sunday.

Sjostrom showed her talent in 50m butterfly in 25.55 and 100m freestyle in 52.82, adding to her two titles won on Saturday.

"It was exciting to win the races. I was just trying to swim the smart race against the best girls in the world. It was great to compete with the best swimmers more often while usually we could only compete at the World Championships and Olympic Games," Sjostrom said.

Hosszu dominated in 200m backstroke 2:09.05 and 200m individual medley 2:08.72, Cate Campbell of Australia smashed 24.00 to take the women's 50m freestyle, followed by Sjostrom 24.11.

Benjamin Proud of Britain was the winner in men's 50m freestyle with a time of 21.48 while Russian swimmers Andrei Minakov won the men's 100m butterfly in 51.44, Kliment Kolesnikov topped the men's 50m backstroke 24.58, Anton Chupkov came from behind in the last 50 and snatched gold in men's 200m breaststroke 2:07.48, beating the pace setter Qin Haiyang 2:08.31.

Chinese Olympic champion Sun Yang clocked 3:42.75 in his favorite 400m freestyle, fastest time this season. He also took 200m freestyle gold to his tally as he powered home 1:46.12.

"I had a special feeling in Guangzhou where I smashed my first Asian record at the 2010 Asian Games. I still felt like a freshman in the pool. I was satisfied with my two events in one night and I trained very hard for this. I hope I can keep the fighting spirit to the Gwangju World Championships and Tokyo Olympic Games, " Sun said.

Ye Shiwen clinched her second champion in the 200m breaststroke in a personal best 2:22.53. "I wanted to show my gratitude to the fans here that they boosted my enthusiasm in the race. I was happy to lift my personal best in both 200m and 100m breaststroke," Ye said.

The FINA Champions Swim Series is a brand new event that invites the world's top swimmers and has a prize purse of almost 3 million U.S. dollars. It will come to Budapest, Hungary in May 11-12 and in Indianapolis, United States during May 31-June 1.
