The International Olympic Committee decided here on Tuesday that four events of breaking, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing have been provisionally included on the sports program of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The decision was made on the day's 134th session of the IOC. According to Olympic Agenda 2020, organizers from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have the right to propose additional sports for its edition of the Games to the IOC.

"The four sports that Paris has proposed are all totally in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 because they contribute to making the program more gender balanced and more urban, and offer the opportunity to connect with the younger generation," said IOC President Thomas Bach. "The proposed sports are in line with these principles and enhance Paris 2024's overall dynamic Games concept, which focuses on inclusivity, inspiring a new audience and hosting socially responsible Games."

Breaking and sport climbing both appeared as medal events at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018, while skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will make their debut in Tokyo next year.

"This is another amazing day for Olympic surfing, as we move one step closer to Paris 2024 and long-term Olympic inclusion," said Fernando Aguerre, International Surfing Association President.

"I want to personally thank both the IOC Membership and the Paris 2024 Organising Committee for believing in our sport and for recognising the value it brings. We are humbled and honoured by the confidence placed in us."

Sabatino Aracu, World Skate President, was also excited, "We are so proud that the Paris 2024 organising committee and the IOC endorsed the Olympic skateboarding and we are sure that the four-new sport-cluster will feed the urban spirit of the 2024 Games."

The proposal for the four sports builds on the evolution of the program from Tokyo 2020 and includes 248 athletes, which will fit within the 10,500-athlete quota, with equal numbers of women and men.

"I am delighted with the IOC Session's vote in favour of our proposal to include breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games program," said Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet.

"Our aim from the outset has been to highlight what has been the strength of the Games for 32 Olympiads now - the diversity of the sports and the excitement that comes with performance - while also taking the opportunity afforded by the IOC to enhance the program and offer a new dimension."

The IOC Executive Board will make the final decision on the existing events, proposed new events and related athlete quotas for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in December 2020.

After the day's vote by the IOC Session, no further sports can be put forward for inclusion on the sports program of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
