Russian veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam winner, will not be able to defend her Washington Open title because of "US visa problems", local media reported on Friday.

The 34-year-old Kuznetsova, who won the US Open in 2004 and Roland Garros five years later, said she never had issues like this in her career and hopes she could finally get a visa to "play some events of the US swing".

The Washington Open, to be held between July 27-August 4, serves as one of the tuneup tournaments for the US Open. It's not clear whether Kuznetsova could catch up with this year's US Open.

The US Open will kick off on August 26.
