Chelsea fans in new racism storm

Chelsea fans have found themselves at the center of a fresh racism storm after a number of their own fans sent racially abusive messages to Tammy Abraham.

The Chelsea striker received the racially charged messages after the 21-year-old missed the decisive penalty in Chelsea's UEFA Super Cup shootout defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Saturday that social media companies need to do more to stop the racial abuse of players over their platforms.

"Tammy is more than disappointed. I am disgusted by so-called Chelsea fans," Lampard said.

"I don't know how it's allowed on the [social media] platforms. It's too easy, so something needs to be done.

"I'm so angry for Tammy and angry for us as a club because that's not what we're about, the club does a lot of work against discrimination on all levels.

"It's a setback when these things happen.

"I have spoken with Tammy, he is a strong character. He's infectious, he is a great young man and his football career is ahead of him. It will be a test of his character that he shouldn't need."

Last season saw Chelsea suspend six fans for using "abusive language and threatening and aggressive behavior" towards Raheem Sterling, which the Manchester City and England forward revealed was racist.

While two further cases of racism are under investigation by the club after the video emerged of Liverpool hitman Mohammed Salah being abused by fans, while a black Chelsea fan also claimed that he was abused by his peers during Chelsea's game against Slavia Prague in the Europa League last season.

In previous seasons, Chelsea saw talismanic captain John Terry suspended for racial abuse on the pitch in 2012, while Chelsea fans were filmed in on the Paris Metro targeting and assaulting a black Parisian in 2015.
