Helsinki Olympic Stadium resumes in August

The Sports Museum of Finland, located in the wing of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, will reopen to the people in August 2020.

The stadium will resume after a five-year interval, completely rebuilt and modernized, said a press release issued by the City of Helsinki.

The core of the new permanent exhibition is composed of emotions and the many meanings of sports for Finns from the late 1800s to the present. Objects and ample audiovisual contents lead visitors back both to glorious moments and to disappointments.

The new Sports Museum offers visitors a wide range of experiences. Visitors can enjoy memorable moments on the exhibition floor by bouldering, by balancing on BMX bikes and surfboards, and with e-sports.

One of the main themes of the museum is the Helsinki Olympic Games of 1952. In addition to presenting single athletes, the exhibition explores the essence of sports heroism: sports heroism is not created by victories alone, but a sports achievement often requires drama to become unforgettable.

A whole section is devoted to winter sports, which are important for Finns. The section leads visitors to sports on snow and ice.

A former library hall has been turned into galleries for temporary exhibitions. The theme of the first temporary exhibition is Olympic Stadium, and it will open at the same time with the permanent exhibition.

Other Sports Museum services will continue operations as before in the stadium wing. The library and research services will operate in the former archives space on the bottom level.
