Belinda Bencic from Switzerland edged Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in full sets in women's singles final of the Tokyo Olympic Games here on Saturday, reported Xinhua.

No. 4 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine rallied past Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to take the bronze.

It was the third Olympic tennis gold medal for Switzerland, after ninth-seeded Bencic registered a nail-biting 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory over the unseeded Vondrousova in two and a half hours.

Bencic won 60 percent (18/30) on first serves, and converted three of five break points.

Her win on Saturday came after Marc Rosset's gold in men's singles at Barcelona 1992 and Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka's title in men's doubles at Beijing 2008.
