Potkonen confirms 2nd medal for Finland at Tokyo Olympics

Finnish boxer Mira Marjut Johanna Potkonen conformed a medal for the country after she beat Esra Yildiz in the women's light (57-60kg) quarterfinal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Tuesday.

After the victory, Potkonen will win at least bronze and she has the opportunity to win either gold or silver also at the age of 40.

Potkonen also won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the only medal of the games for the country.

"It was a great match and it is a great feeling to go on to the next round," reported national broadcaster Yle, quoting Potkonen as saying to Yle Sport.

She will fight with Brazilian boxer Beatriz Ferreira in the semi-final on Thursday morning.

Earlier, on July 29, Finnish swimmer Matti Mattsson secured third place in the 200-metre breaststroke in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won the first medal for the country.

Mattsson took a time of 2:07.13 to win the bronze in the event where Izaac Stubblety-Cook of Australia won gold with a time 2:06.38 and Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands won silver with a time of 2:07.01.
