Potkonen bags bronze at Tokyo Olympics

Finnish boxer Mira Marjut Johanna Potkonen won bronze in the women's light (57-60kg) boxing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Thursday.

Potkonen, a 40-year-old boxer had to be satisfied with the third place as she was defeated by 28 years old Brazilian boxer Beatriz Ferreira in the semi-final.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Potkonen conformed a medal for the country after she beat Turkish boxer Esra Yildiz in the quarterfinal of the event.

Although the boxing career of Potkonen ended with a defeat, the Finnish boxer made a history as the oldest-ever medalist in the Olympics boxing.

"It was disappointing that I couldn't manage it. There were higher stakes but it just didn't happen and it was annoying," Potkonen told national broadcaster Yle with tear.

Potkonen also won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the only medal of the games for the country.

Earlier, on July 29, Finnish swimmer Matti Mattsson secured third place in the 200-metre breaststroke in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won the first medal for the country.
