Bayern beat Cologne 3-2 after Gnabry double, Hoffenheim held

Serge Gnabry gave sloppy Bayern Munich a 3-2 home win over Cologne in the Bundesliga on Sunday after the visitors had fought back from 2-0 down.
Julian Nagelsmann, in his first home game in charge of Bayern, hauled off the again poor Leroy Sane at the break and his replacement Jamal Musiala soon set up Robert Lewandowski for his fourth goal in all competitions already this season.
Gnabry then turned in Thomas Mueller's cross but Cologne pulled one back on the hour through Anthony Modeste's bullet header.
More loose Bayern defending allowed Mark Uth to flick home moments later in the rain but Gnabry's booming finish on 71 minutes sealed the nervous win.
"The result was good but the game was too wild," Nagelsmann told DAZN. "We have a bit to do."
Bayern had opened the season with a 1-1 Bundesliga draw at Borussia Moenchengladbach before beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in Tuesday's Super Cup.
Hoffenheim earlier missed the chance to go top of the Bundesliga after an entertaining 2-2 home draw with Union Berlin.
Bayern began with an emotional tribute to their late striker Gerd Mueller, the Bundesliga record scorer who died last Sunday aged 75.
There was also a surprise in the line-up with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer passed fit after ankle trouble, while Sane came in for the injured Kingsley Coman.
Niklas Suele went close early on but the hosts were far from convincing, the crowd notably getting on Sane's back after misplaced passes and a poor free-kick.
Sane was withdrawn at half-time with full-back Tanguy Nianzou also making way for Josip Stanisic.
The attacking change had the desired effect within five minutes of the restart as the lively Musiala got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Lewandowski's easy finish.
Gnabry's first goal on 59 minutes looked to have settle matters but supporter fears about their suspect defence amid a stretched squad were proven when Modeste rose unopposed to head in a cross.
New Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano then looked at fault as Uth again had too much time to finish at the near post.
Gnabry, criticized by some Bayern fans after a subdued campaign last term, had the last laugh though when he was afforded too much space in the box and blasted home.
"We had more ball control and we were calmer in the second half," Gnabry said. "We have to make sure we don't concede such easy goals...straight after restarts."
Cologne's Uth said: "We have done very well tonight. They way we played we maybe deserved something."
Bayern are fourth while Hoffenheim could have joined Wolfsburg as the only Bundesliga side with a maximum six points so far with a win. Instead they must settle for second after being pegged back by Union.
Last weekend's 4-0 win at Augsburg was followed by a more complicated home start to the season, with Union taking the lead on 10 minutes when full-back Niko Giesselmann slotted in on the rebound after Oliver Baumann saved his header.
Union's Max Kruse struck the woodwork with a free-kick but Hoffenheim, 11th last season, hit back quickly with Kevin Akpoguma netting an excellent header following a fine move.
Andrej Kramaric then expertly set up winger Jacob Bruun Larsen for 2-1 on 30 minutes and his second league goal already.
But Union levelled quickly after the break. Taiwo Awoniyi ran on to Kruse's through ball and Baumann again parried his effort, only for Akpoguma to botch a clearance and allow the striker to score at the second attempt.
On Friday Hoffenheim visit Dortmund, beaten 2-1 at Freiburg on Saturday.
Union, who had drawn 1-1 with Leverkusen last weekend, lost
Marvin Friedrich to a second booking late on.
The Berliners, seventh last term, thumped Finnish side KuPS 4-0 away in the first leg of the inaugural Conference League play-offs on Thursday in their first European appearance in 20 years. The return leg is this Thursday.
