Ice Hockey U-20 WC cancelled due to coronavirus

The International Ice Hockey Federation Council on Wednesday decided to cancel the ongoing Ice Hockey World Junior Championship following the worsening coronavirus situation.

The council took the decision to cancel the tournament being held in Edmonton, Canada following a recommendation by the COVID-19 Medical Group and the IIHF Medical Committee.

The committee said that the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will be cancelled to ensure the health and safety of all participants, according to IIHF press release.

The decision of cancellation was taken following cancellation of Russia-Slovakia match scheduled for Wednesday as a Russian player was tested coronavirus positive and the team went in quarantine.

Earlier on Wednesday, the match between Finland and Czech Republic and the match between Switzerland and USA had to cancel following coronavirus infections of players.

Finland were declared winners by 1-0 against Czech Republic in their third group match as the Czechs had to go in quarantine following coronavirus infection of one player of the team.

The International Ice Hockey Federation took the decision as per the IIHF Rule regarding match cancellation.

Finland scored their second consecutive victory in the championship beating Austria by 7 goals to 1 at Rogers Place Arena in Edmonton, Canada late Monday night.

The Finns won their first match against Germany by 3 goals to 1 on Sunday.
