Many Bundesliga football and other sports clubs can allow more fans into their arenas than under current coronavirus regulations, according to a decision from regional politicians in Germany, reported dpa.

The agreement from the 16 federal state chancelleries seen on Wednesday by dpa says that big national outdoor events like Bundesliga games can have up to 50 per cent of venue capacity or a maximum 10,000 spectators.

Indoor events can have 30 per cent capacity or 4,000 fans.

The decisions are binding for all states but must first be officially added to coronavirus regulations.

The federal government and the states had agreed last month to have countrywide rules by February 9, after restrictions started again late last year.

States had different rules lately, with Bavaria now allowing 10,000 spectators or 25 per cent capacity, Baden-Württemberg 6,000 fans but North Rhine-Westphalia only 750.

In that state Borussia Dortmund, Cologne and Arminia Bielefeld have lodged an appeal at an administrative court but it appears that the new rules would be implemented immediately later on Wednesday.
