Germany's Olympic luge champion Felix Loch has expressed his shock and appealed for peace after a visit to the Ukrainian border, reported dpa.
"I will never forget what we have seen and experienced in the last few hours," Loch wrote on social media. "It just changes everything! This war must stop! All wars must stop!!!"
Together with his wife Lisa, the 32-year-old drove to the Ukrainian border in Poland with 16 helpers in eight buses as part of the 'Athletes for Ukraine' campaign.
Three vehicles came from the German Ski Association, two from the Bobsleigh and Sledding Federation and other club buses from the region brought aid supplies following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
They took 47 women and children back with them on the return journey.
"We are working together with an aid organization from Rosenheim," Loch told broadcaster Bayern 2.
It was difficult for Loch and his wife to decide who to take with them on the way back, he said.
"You have to get into a foreign car and drive to a foreign country," he said, adding that it was "extremely hard". On the way back, his wife "just cried for four or five hours", he added.
