Union defeat was perfect wake-up call for Rangers clash: Tedesco

RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco thinks the 2-1 Bundesliga defeat by Union Berlin at the weekend might have come at the perfect time as they prepare to face Rangers in the Europa League semi-finals.

The home loss ended a run of 15 games without defeat and slightly complicated their hopes of finishing in a Champions League spot.

"We will learn our lessons and do better," the 36-year-old told a news conference on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's first leg in Leipzig.

"Maybe the defeat came at the right time before crunch time."

The Red Bulls are already in the German Cup final against Freiburg but any thoughts of a Europa League final three days earlier on May 18 in Seville will have to wait.

"That will only be decided in Glasgow," Tedesco said, referring to the second leg.

Rangers knocked out Borussia Dortmund 6-4 in the play-offs before conquering Red Star Belgrade and Braga.

"The win against Dortmund really surprised me. It showed that they can beat any opponent," Tedesco added.

Up to 7,000 Rangers fans are expected in Leipzig, with the Scottish side's coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst saying it will feel like a home game.

Tedesco is not worried and sees the positives.

"I think it's good. They pay for hotels, restaurants and beer. It's good for Leipzig's economy," Tedesco smiled.

Willi Orban and Mohamed Simakan are missing from defence due to suspension, along with midfielder Kevin Kampl.

Tedesco is therefore considering switching to a four-man defence.
