Fernandez wins men's short program at figure skating

Javier Fernandez of Spain won the men's short program on Thursday at the World Figure Skating Championships 2017 held in Helsinki, Finland, with 109.05 points.

Fernandez's rival Shoma Uno from Japan ranked the second with 104.86 points, followed by Canadian skater Patrick Chan with 102.13 points.

Jin Boyang, the only Chinese skater who participated in the men's competition, finished fourth with 98.64 points. His ranking has secured two Olympic spots for China in Pyeongchang Winter Olympics next year.

However, Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, Olympic Champion and gold medalist at last year's World Figure Skating Championships, only took the 5th place.

The World Figure Skating Championships 2017 kicked of on Wednesday at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki. Later on Thursday evening, the Pairs Free Skating will be held.
