The city of Augsburg is planning emergency matters to make next week's canoe slalom world championships happen despite low water levels at the venue, reported dpa.

Training was suspended earlier in the week because the artificial course is not fed with enough water from the Lech river which according to officials has the lowest water level in decades owing to dry weather.

A temporary concrete wall is now to help dam up enough water for the July 26-31 worlds.

There are hopes that training could resume Thursday but Augsburg mayor Eva Weber admitted there was no guarantee that the championships could really go ahead.

The Augsburg venue was the first man-made canoe slalom course in the world, built for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The 2022 worlds were given to Augsburg as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Games.
