Duplantis, Amusan break world records at athletics worlds

Swedish star pole vaulter Armand Duplantis added one centimeter to his own world record, and Nigeria's Tobi Amusan smashed the women's 100m hurdles world record as the 2022 World Athletics Championships concluded here on Sunday, reported Xinhua.

The 22-year-old Duplantis sealed his first World Championships title after clearing the bar at 6.00 meters. He went on to leap over 6.06m and cleared 6.21m in his second attempt, beating the previous world record of 6.20m he set four months ago at the World Indoor Championships.

It has been the fifth time for Duplantis to renew the world record but the first time for him to manage the feat outdoors. The last time when the event's world record was set in an outdoor competition dated back to 1994 when Ukraine's Sergey Bubka improved the mark to 6.14m.

American pole vaulter Christopher Nilsen and Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines both cleared 5.94m. Nilsen took the silver after count-back, and Obiena settled for the bronze, the first-ever World Championships medal for his country, and improved his own Asian record by one centimeter.

The 25-year-old Amusan stormed to a world record of 12.12 seconds to finish on top of the women's 100m hurdles semis, cutting 0.08s off the previous mark set by Kendra Harrison of the United States in 2016.

The in-form Nigerian could have further improved the world record in the final as she crossed the line with a stunning mark of 12.06s. However, as a tailwind of 2.5m/s assisted Amusan, her winning time would not count as a world record.

Jamaica's Britany Anderson finished second in 12.23s, followed by Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.

In the men's 35km race walk early in the morning, Italy's reigning 20km Olympic champion Massimo Stano won with a championship record of two hours, 23 minutes and 14 seconds.

Japan's Masatora Kawano lagged one second behind to finish second with a new Asian record. Sweden's Perseus Karlstrom collected his second bronze medal in Oregon in 2:23:44.

American Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu extended her all-win record of the season in the women's 800m, snatching the world title in one minute 56.30 seconds. Britain's Keely Hodgkinson and Kenyan Mary Moraa took the silver and bronze, respectively.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, the runner-up in the men's 1,500m event, clocked 13:09.24 to win the 5,000m gold medal. Kenya's Jacob Krop finished second, followed by Oscar Chelimo of Uganda.

2017 world champion Kevin Mayer of France won his second decathlon world title with a total of 8,816 points, while Malaika Mihambo from Germany retained the women's long jump title with a winning mark of 7.12m.

The hosts dominated the 4x400m relay events, winning both the men's and women's races with world-leading times. Jamaica finished second in both events while Belgium took the men's bronze and Britain finished third in the women's race.
