Champions Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga standings for the first time in two months with a 6-2 thrashing of Mainz on Saturday.

Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Sadio Mane gave Bayern a 3-0 lead, Silvan Widmer pulled one back before half-time, before Leon Goretzka, teenager Mathys Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting wrapped up matters while Marcus Ingvartsen got Mainz' second.

Mane and Mainz forward Jonathan Burkardt failed to convert penalties given after video reviews but each side then scored seconds later, Mane himself on the rebound and Widmer after the ensuing corner kick.

Bayern are now two points ahead of Union Berlin who can however return to the top on Sunday against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

One point behind Union are Borussia Dortmund who won a tense duel of Champions League teams 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

"We wanted to get to the place in the table where we belong for at least one night. Let's see what happens tomorrow," Goretzka told Sky TV.

Gnabry slotted home Mane's low cross for a fifth-minute lead, Musiala got the second in the 28th into the bottom left corner after another fine attacking move, and Mane made it 3-0 in the 43rd on the rebound of his penalty saved by goalkeeper Robin Zentner.

But Mainz, who had earlier been denied by the crossbar and post, pulled one back on the stroke of half-time. Sven Ulreich tipped Burkardt's poorly executed penalty over the bar but captain Widmer headed home off the ensuing corner kick.

Choupo-Moting hit the post for Bayern but it was 4-1 from Goretzka's thumping header in the 58th off Mane's second assist of the day.

Substitute Tel scored Bayern's fifth with the help of a deflection, and in-form Choupo-Moting also netted against his former club with four minutes left - after Ulreich had gifted Mainz their second from Invartsen in the 82nd.

"The whole week was very satisfactory, the way we played. We have a good energy on the field. It's a lot of fun when the goals come," Gnabry said.

Dortmund drew first blood at Europa League winners Frankfurt from Germany winger Julian Brandt in the 21st but Frankfurt were level five minutes later from Daichi Kamada's shot into the bottom left corner.

Frankfurt screamed for a penalty when Jesper Lindström was pushed down by Karim Adeyemi but to everyone's surprise there was no video review.

Dortmund were ahead again in the 52nd from Jude Bellingham's solo, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel preserved the lead with big saves while defender Nico Schlotterbeck cleared a shot from former Dortmund star Mario Götze on the goalline as Dortmund moved past Frankfurt into third.

RB Leipzig defeated ailing Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the day's other meeting of Champions League sides from Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner; Felix Nmecha got a brace as Wolfsburg crushed lowly Bochum 4-0; and VfB Stuttgart got a stoppage time 2-1 win over Augsburg from Waldemar Anton.

Werder Bremen beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 on Friday while the other Sunday games are bottom club Schalke v Freiburg and Cologne v Hoffenheim.
