FIFA President Gianni Infantino urged the world to unite ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, slamming some media critics of the host nation, reported Xinhua.
On the eve of the World Cup, the 52-year-old President urged the global community to seize the unique opportunity the tournament provides to unite over its shared passion for football under the banner of tolerance, understanding and respect.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday in front of more than 400 accredited media members, Infantino said that now, more than ever is the time to speak about the positives of the FIFA World Cup to bring the people in Qatar and across the world together.
He advised all the related parties to use the global game as a vehicle to connect rather than divide.
"The only thing I'm asking you is to engage, to help. Don't divide, try to unite," Infantino said.
The president emphasized that for the first time in World Cup history, supporters of all 32 teams will be able to gather in one city to share the passion.
"Look at the city, it's beautiful, it's geared up. People want to celebrate," Infantino continued. "We have to spread understanding ... Football brings people together and engagement can bring real changes."
Infantino urged the media representatives to open their hearts and minds to experience new cultures during their time in Doha.
"This particular FIFA World Cup will help to open the eyes of many people from the western world to the Arab world," Infantino added. "We're living in the same world, we have to live together, we have to understand each other and understand that we are different as well."
He continued: "We have beautiful stadiums. We have a city that wants to welcome the world. Let's please celebrate and hope that we can give some smiles to people around the world."
The 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup will kick off at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday when host Qatar takes on Ecuador. More than 1.5 million fans are due to travel to Qatar for the tournament.
