Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic powered into her second Grand Slam final after downing former world No.3 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-3 in the Wimbledon women's singles semifinal on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
The 2019 French Open runner-up held nerve in the second set, when she broke twice to surge for a 4-0 lead before Svitolina broke back twice to close the gap to 4-3. Vondrousova restored her form, breaking for the third time in the set to serve for the victory at 5-3.
"I didn't play for six months last year," said Vondrousova, reflecting on the wrist surgeries which made 2022 miserable for her. "I'm so grateful to be here playing like this again. I cannot believe it.
"Elina is such a fighter and a great person. I was crazy nervous the whole match. I just had to stay focused and fight for every game," said Vondrousova, who is ranked 42nd currently.
The win made the former junior world No.1 the first unseeded player to reach the final at the All England Club since Open Era.
The 24-year-old now awaits the winner between second seed Aryna Sabalenka and No.6 seed Ons Jabeur.
