Thomas Müller and Bayern Munich have agreed on a contract renewal and the official announcement is to come later in the week, reported dpa, quoting the Bild paper.

Bild said that as expected Müller will have his term extended by one year until 2025 at Bayern, where he has spent his entire career after rising through their academy.

Müller, 34, himself had remained vague on Sunday after a 3-0 Bundesliga win against VfB Stuttgart. He said he had talked with club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen but not about contractual matters.

He had previously said that he wanted to play another year and at the highest level. Although no longer a regular starter at Bayern, a move elsewhere was effectively ruled out.

In addition, the Champions League final 2025 is in Munich, and Munich hope to reach the decider and then have a better result than in 2012 when they were beaten on penalties by Chelsea for the title in their home arena, after Müller had put them ahead in regulation.

Club officials have repeatedly named Müller a Bayern icon, and Dreesen has also said he would like to tie him to the club beyond his playing career.

Goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich recently renewed their Bayern contracts while Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr could be leaving when their deals run out in summer.
