Borussia Dortmund hope that Jadon Sancho can score more goals in the coming weeks starting with a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, reported dpa.
Sancho arrived in January on loan for the rest of the season from Manchester United, and scored a classy second in Dortmund's 2-1 victory at Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Sancho added to the 38 goals he scored during his first Dortmund term 2017-2021, and the 39 make him joint most successful Englishman in the German top flight, the other being former Cologne player Tony Woodcock.
Dortmund are fourth, one point ahead of RB Leipzig, as they chase a berth in the next Champions League, while in this season's competition they are aiming for a quarter-final spot after drawing 1-1 in Eindhoven in the first leg.
Dortmund hope that Sancho can help them reach these goals as the 23-year-old aims to rebuild his career after not playing in many months at United after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.
"We need Jadon, again on Wednesday and over the next weeks as well. Goals help. He previously had a assist. This goal will give him a boost," sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.
Looking at the game in Bremen, he added: "He awarded himself for his work. Everyone was happy for Jadon because they can see that he wants it, that he works, that he is totally willing to help the team."
Coach Edin Terzic revealed that Sancho was "very dissatisfied after the game because he said he lost too many balls.
"That's what I like about him, he doesn't reduce his performance to the goal."
Terzic said it was "only logical that he isn't his former self yet, considering the last 12 months. It's like a player having a cruciate ligament tear."
