Record champions Bayern Munich started the new Bundesliga season with a late 3-2 win at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday, as coach Vincent Kompany made his debut in the league.
Jamal Musiala gave Bayern the lead in the 20th minute, but their advantage didn't last long into the second half as Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty after Sacha Boey pushed Tiago Tomás in the box.
Lovro Majer converted the spot-kick to equalize in the 47th and stunned the Bavarians with a brace in the 55th to put the home team ahead.
But it was all level again in the 65th. Harry Kane met Joshua Kimmich's cross with his head and the ball deflected on Jakub Kaminski before falling into the net.
The game was entirely open and Bayern had the last word after a superb work from Thomas Müller was completed by Serge Gnabry's shot into the corner in the 82nd.
"We are very happy and are happy to take it. It's good for morale and self-confidence. It was a very exhausting Sunday afternoon. The equalizer straight after half-time shocked us a bit," Gnabry said.
Müller was playing a Bayern club record 474th Bundesliga game, while it was his 709th competitive game for the club, equalling Bayern great Sepp Maier for most appearances for the team.
Kompany enjoys first Bundesliga game as Bayern coach
Kompany joined Bayern during summer, replacing Thomas Tuchel after a season in which the Bavarians failed to win a trophy for the first time in over a decade.
After making his debut in the German Cup with a 4-0 win against SSV Ulm earlier this month, Kompany said he enjoyed his first Bundesliga match.
"I enjoyed it, it was my first Bundesliga game as a coach," he said. As a player, he had already played in the German top flight during his stint at SV Hamburg between 2006 and 2008.
"In the end, the mentality was right and that's why we still won. Mistakes happen, the important is how the team reacts. That took a while in the second half. It wasn't perfect but we keep it going," he said.
St Paulilose to Heidenheim in Bundesliga return
Promoted St Pauli were defeated 2-0 at home by Heidenheim as they played their first Bundesliga game since 2011.
The hosts had a big chance saved by goalkeeper Kevin Müller in the 65th and the ball was loose in the Hoffenheim box. But the guests recovered it to launch a devastating counter-attack which Paul Wanner concluded with the goal in the 66th.
Jan Schöppner added a second in the 82nd to secure Heidenheim the three points.
St Pauli suffered a blow ahead of the season with coach Fabian Hürzeler leaving for Brighton in the English Premier League.
He was replaced by fellow German Alexander Blessin, who won the Belgian Cup last term and finished top of the regular league season with Union Saint-Gilloise.
Clubs again wore black armbands on Sunday in memory of the victims of the knife attack in the German western city of Solingen, in which three people were killed and eight injured on Friday evening.
Leaders Bayer Leverkusen claimed a 3-2 win in stoppage time at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, while last season's runners-up VfB Stuttgart were defeated 3-1 at Freiburg on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund started the new Bundesliga term with a 2-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.
