Heidenheim had a successful start into their maiden European adventure with a 2-1 victory over Olimpija Ljubljana in the Conference League on Thursday, reported dpa.

Teen-aged Bayern Munich loanee Paul Wanner smashed the winner in the 83rd minute on the rebound of his penalty kick after a Peter Agba handball which was saved by Ljubljana goalkeeper Matevz Vidovsek.

Adrian Beck had put the Bundesliga club ahead into the bottom right corner six minutes into the match, and team-mate Leonardo Scienza hit the post.

The southern German hosts then became a little passive and Ljubljana got a 77th-minute equalizer from Alex Blanco's header.

That would have extended the Slovenians' unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 matches but Wanner then clinched it for Heidenheim.

"It is a great feeling to play on an international level with Heidenheim and to win the first match," Wanner said.

Coach Frank Schmidt said: ‘We could have made it easier for ourselves because we had a lot of chances and kept our opponents in the game."
