Borussia Mönchengladbach fell behind after scoring an own goal, but the team reacted well and grabbed a point in a 1-1 draw at Mainz on Friday, reported dpa.

After a goalless first half, the deadlock was finally broken in the 55th as Mainz took the lead thanks to Stefan Lainer's own goal.

But Gladbach found a quick response and were level just two minutes later as Germany forward Tim Kleindienst used his head to send Franck Honorat's cross into the net.

Mainz had to endure late pressure and Kleindienst could have claimed the away win for Gladbach, but his header from close range was palmed by goalkeeper Robin Zentner in the 90th minute, while Julian Weigl had his shot from distance was also parried in stoppage time.

"In the end we lacked a little bit of luck. We created chances to take the win back home. Nevertheless, it's important that we didn't lose this game," Kleindiesnt told broadcasters DAZN.

Mainz midfielder Paul Nebel said that the team "can be happy" with the performance despite the result.

"Of course I would have preferred to win. We had a good game, a shame we couldn't decide it in our favour," he said.

With the draw, Gladbach moved up one position to 10th in the standings, while Mainz remained 12th ahead of the weekend matches.

Saturday's schedule includes Augsburg v Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen v champions Bayer Leverkusen. Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich visit bottom-of-the-table Bochum on Sunday.
