Antoine Griezmann was the hero for Atletico Madrid as he scored the first two goals in their 3-1 Champions League win at home over Bruges on Wednesday night.
After winning away to Monaco two weeks ago, Atletico collected six points to follow Dortmund who is topping Group A with advantage on goal difference.
The opening goal came in the 27th minute when Griezmann controlled a ball from the fellow countryman Thomas Lemar on his chest before calmly slotting it into the back of the net.
If the fans in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium were expecting that goal to open the floodgates they were to be disappointed as Atletico failed to take control of the game and Bruges equalized thanks to Arnaut Groeneveld, who fired home from outside of the penalty area six minutes before the break.
Left back Felipe Luis replaced Jose Gimenez at halftime with Lucas Hernandez moving into central defense. Atletico took the game to their rivals in the second half with Saul and Thomas Partey both having chances before Griezmann scored his second of the game with a left foot shot from the edge of the penalty area after a pass from Diego Costa, who had to leave the pitch injured straight afterwards.
Angel Correa missed chances to add to Atletico's lead, but Griezmann had a hand in the third goal of the night with a pass to Koke who fired home from the center of the Bruges area deep into injury time.
