Defending champion Marc Marquez of Spain took pole position for MotoGP's Argentine Grand Prix after holding off challenges from Maverick Vinales and Andrea Dovizioso in qualifying on Saturday.

Marquez clocked a best time of one minute 38.04 seconds on his Honda to edge out Yamaha's Vinales by 0.154 seconds.

"It hasn't been an easy day," Marquez said, referring to the changing weather conditions. "But I'm happy with the pace and the feel of the bike. Tomorrow we'll see how the weather is and how we'll manage the race."

Ducati rider Dovizioso, winner of the season's opening race in Qatar on March 10, qualified third fastest for Sunday's Grand Prix, 0.164 seconds off the pace.

Yamaha's seven-time world champion Valentino Ross will start from fourth on the grid with a best time that was 0.241seconds slower than Marquez.
