66 nabbed for suspected drunk driving

Police conducted a total of 21,651 breathalyzer tests on drivers during a nationwide monitoring marathon, said the police in a briefing.

During the monitoring, the police caught 66 drivers suspected of drunk driving, of which 27 are suspected of aggravated drunk driving and 14 of driving while intoxicated.

The police also arrested 16 wanted persons during the monitoring marathon.

The monitoring began on Friday, 13 December at 2 p.m. and ended on Saturday, 14 December at 2 p.m.

Annually, approximately 18,000 people are caught driving while drunk. The police’s intensified surveillance of pre-Christmas traffic, carried out about a month ago, caught a total of 255 suspected drunk drivers over two weekends. Of these, 94 drivers are suspected of driving while seriously intoxicated. 63 cases were drug-related.
