Five buses in special liveries inspired by distinctly Finnish themes ranging from heavy metal to Formula 1 now await passengers making their way between Helsinki Airport’s terminal lounge and aircraft.
The apron buses have been customised as part of Finland’s independence centenary celebrations, said a press release of Finavia, the company responsible for maintaining and developing the country’s airports and air navigation system. In addition, videos on the themes are shown during the commuting.
“We want to introduce all the passengers to our country, whether they stayed here for a week or only 30 minutes,” said Finavia Marketing and Communications Senior Vice President Katja Siberg.
One of the five buses is decorated in honour of the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius. Another is dedicated to a fundamental part of Finnish identity – the summer cottage or kesämökki.
Finns are fascinated by and very good at motorsports, and the Formula 1 bus represents that cultural aspect. In addition, a vehicle with an Olympics motif pays tribute to the country’s hero athletes.
So far, the response to these Finland 100-themed buses has been quite positive. “We have seen some delightful comments on social media,” said Finavia Marketing Manager Anna Tuomi. “The buses have been spotted by famous Finnish bands, too: 69 Eyes shared a photo of the heavy metal-themed bus and Amorphis the summer cottage one.”
