Tourist inflow nosedives in Nov

Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments declined by 34.3 per cent to 0.73 million in November year on year, according to the Statistics Finland.

Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased outside Greater Helsinki by 25.4 per cent but in Greater Helsinki by 59.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 80.9 per cent and 87,000 overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists for the month.

Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 0.82 million overnight stays, which is 47.9 per cent lower than one year before.

Overnight stays did not increase from any of the most important countries. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Swiss tourists, down by 5,100 nights.

The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 56,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 92.9 per cent down year on year in November.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Estonians with 10,500 overnight stays followed by Germans with 10,500 overnight stays, Swedes with 5,300 overnight stays, and Russians with 4,300 overnight stays.

Overnight stays declined in each region, but the smallest drop in relative terms was in Kainuu, where overnight stays declined by 0.9 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Uusimaa, by 68.2 per cent and second most in Ostrobothnia, by 58.6 per cent.

In November, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 90.40 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 113.94. In that month, in total 51,056 hotel rooms were available in Finland, which was 2,938 fewer than that in November 2019.

In January to November 2020, a total of 13.54 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 36.5 per cent less than that in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 11.31 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 2.23 million for non-resident ones. The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 24.8 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 64.5 per cent year on year.
