Foreign tourist inflow shrinks 68% in 2020

In January to December 2020, a total of 14.31 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments, which was 38.0 per cent less than that in the corresponding period of one year before, according to the Statistics Finland.

In all, 12.02 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 2.29 million for non-resident tourists.

The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 25 per cent and the number of nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 67.5 year on year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Estonians. Overnight stays by them declined by 90,900 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 563,000 nights. Their overnight stays were 68.6 per cent down from that in January to December 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 258,000 overnight stays, followed by Germans with 246,000 overnight stays, Britons with 168,000 overnight stays, French with 158,000 overnight stays, Estonians (152,000 nights), Dutch tourists (131,000 nights), Swedes (102,000 nights) and US tourists (82,000 nights).

In December 2020, the realised average price of a hotel room was 99.99 euro per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was 124.80 euro.

There were a total of 49,397 hotel rooms available in Finland, 5,157 fewer than that in December 2019.
