Airports see higher passengers in July but still lower than normal

A total of 422,785 passengers flew through Finnish airports in July 2021, which was 61 per cent higher than one year ago, but nevertheless 82 per cent fewer than in July 2019, according to Statistics Finland.
The exceptionally high relative growth in the number of passengers compared to the year before is caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic one year ago.
There were 356,408 passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 66,377 passengers at other domestic airports.
Helsinki Airport accounted for 84 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.
In July 2021, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 83 per cent lower and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports 71 per cent lower than in July 2019.
Compared with last year’s July, the number of passengers increased by 64 per cent at Helsinki-Vantaa and by 45 per cent at other domestic airports.
Seventy-three per cent of the passengers were from international flights and 27 per cent from domestic flights.
The share of passengers on international flights was 84 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 12 per cent in total at other domestic airports.
In July 2021, air freight and mail transport totalled 12,429 tonnes, which was 28 per cent more than one year earlier.
Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 6,665 tonnes of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 5,764 tonnes were incoming.
