Finnish airports see higher passengers but 67% lower than 2019

Altogether 772,206 passengers flew through Finnish airports in October 2021, which was about four times higher than the stipulated period of last year, but still only around one-third of the number of passengers in October 2019, according to Statistics Finland.

The exceptionally high relative growth in the number of passengers compared to the year before is caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic starting from spring 2020.

There were 660,323 passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 111,883 passengers at other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 86 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

In October 2021, the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 65 per cent lower and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports 67 per cent lower than in October 2019.

Compared with last year’s October, the number of passengers increased by 347 per cent at Helsinki Airport and by 130 per cent at other domestic airports.

Seventy-five per cent of the passengers were from international flights and 25 per cent from domestic flights.

The share of passengers on international flights was 86 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 14 per cent in total at other domestic airports.

In October 2021, air freight and mail transport totalled 15,709 tonnes, which was 25 per cent more than one year earlier.

In total, 99.8 per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki Airport and 99.6 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 8,533 tonnes of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 7,176 tonnes incoming.
