Foreign tourist inflow drops by 9% in 2021

The number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists decreased by nine percent in 2021 compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Finland.

A total of 2.1 million overnight stays for non-resident tourists were recorded in 2021 as the number of foreign tourists started to increase from the latter half of the year.

Meanwhile, a total of 15.4 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and the number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 28 per cent.

The total number of overnight stays was nearly one quarter lower than in 2019 prior to the pandemic.

The number of overnight stays by resident tourists returned almost to the level of 2019 pre-pandemic level.

Hotel occupancy rates remained at a low level in 2021 as well.

In most regions the average price of a hotel room was already higher than before the pandemic, but in Uusimaa a hotel room was around EUR 20 cheaper.
