An abandoned wallpaper factory in Helsinki caught fire on Monday afternoon, causing delays and possible cancellations of trains, local media reported.

The burning factory is located alongside the major railway line heading toward north out of the capital. Thick smoke drifted toward the east and spread to nearby area, said the Helsinki Rescue Department.

Police closed the nearby railway station due to the smoke. According to the rescue department, trains passing through the scene moved slowly without stopping at the station.

The national rail operator VR noted that the situation might cause some cancellations of commuter trains at rush hour in late afternoon.

Because of the blaze and the smoke, the rescue department advised local residents living in the district to stay at home, close their doors and windows and switch off ventilation devices as well.
