Construction work to build seven new departure gates at Helsinki Airport terminal one began on Monday, said an official press release.
“The number of passengers is growing. Helsinki Airport will open new routes in rapid succession and the number of flights to the current destinations will increase. The growth of long haul traffic will generate more European and domestic operated routes,” said Henri Hansson, technical director at Finavia.
The focus of the work will be on long-haul flights, which means extension of the terminal section serving non-Schengen traffic and the modernization of its platform.
Finavia, the organization responsible for maintaining and developing airports in Finland, will invest a total of 900 million euros for the development of the airport.
The construction to expand the terminal is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019. The aim of the development programme is to strengthen the position of Helsinki Airport in both the international competition between airports and as a significant airline hub between Europe and Asia.
