Russians become largest foreign tourists’ group in Finland in Sep

The number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists was almost double in September this year compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Finland.

Russians made up the largest group of foreign visitors with around 50,000 overnight stays.

The number of nights spent by tourists was 15 per cent higher in the whole country and 72 per cent higher in Uusimaa in September 2022 than one year earlier.

In total, 1.45 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 0.40 million for non-resident tourists.

The number of nights spent by resident tourists was four per cent higher than in the previous year and 11 per cent higher than in September 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of nights spent by foreign tourists was around one quarter lower and that of Asians over 60 per cent lower than in September 2019.

The largest groups of visitors were from Russia followed by Sweden and Germany. The number of overnight stays by Russians was 17 per cent higher than in September 2019.

The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 57 per cent. Compared to the previous year, the occupancy rate grew by 11 percentage points.

The average price of a hotel room was EUR 114, having been EUR 100 one year earlier.

Hotel rooms were most expensive in Pirkanmaa, EUR 126, and in Uusimaa, EUR 125.
