The Finnish Border Guard on Monday launched a pilot project on the use of a digital travel document at Helsinki Airport on Monday, said country’s airports operator Finavia in a press release.
The project will enable passengers on Finnair flights to London, Edinburgh and Manchester to use a separately marked border control checkpoint to pass more fluently through border control.
According to the Finnish Border Guard’s news bulletin, the digital travel document DTC is reportedly being tested in real border control for the first time in the world in this pilot project.
Passengers on the aforementioned Finnair flights who are Finnish citizens can participate in the pilot.
Participation requires prior registration as a DTC user at a police license services’ service point.
In addition to the DTC pilot project ongoing in Finland and Croatia, the digital travel document is simultaneously being piloted in a similar project in air traffic between the Netherlands and Canada.
Both projects produce data for the European Commission’s legislative needs as part of the Commission’s broad digital identity policy package.
