Adverse weather is likely to disrupt air traffic in the country on Tuesday, warned Finavia, the company that operates the country’s airports.

According to weather forecasts, there will be heavy snowfall and strong winds on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to keep only one of the three runways in Helsinki Airport in operation, said a press release.

This means the air traffic will slow down as there is less capacity available.

Heavy snowfall will also limit the air traffic capacity by causing low visibility. Altogether, this will mean delays.

Delays are feared during the peak hours starting from 2.00 pm, but part of the flights may still depart and arrive on time.

The entire Helsinki Airport staff is ready to make sure that travelling via Helsinki is as smooth as possible, said Finavia.

Finnish snow-how is globally well-known and recognised. When it comes to snow, the airport has been closed only once since year 2003 for 30 minutes.

At Helsinki Airport, the authorities can clear the snow on runways in just 11 minutes.

According to the press release, the airport authorities invest in high quality maintenance vehicles and equipment as well as in training and education of the staff to face such situations.
