Foreign tourist influx rises, local tourists drop in Finland in December

A total of 1.88 million overnight stays were recorded at accommodation establishments in Finland in December 2024, which is four per cent more than in the previous year, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of nights spent by resident tourists, 0.98 million, went down by five per cent and that of nights spent by non-resident tourists, 0.90 million, grew by 16 per cent from the previous year.

In December 2024, the highest numbers of foreign visitors came from the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

The highest number of overnight stays was recorded in Lapland, where the number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists, 0.52 million, grew by nine per cent from the year before.

The number of overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by 20 per cent in Lapland, being 0.07 million.

The second highest number of overnight stays was recorded in Uusimaa, where the number of overnight stays by resident tourists, 0.27 million, remained on level with the previous year, and the number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists, 0.25 million, rose by 28 per cent from the previous year.

The hotel room occupancy rate was 82 per cent in Lapland and 49 per cent in the whole country.

On average, hotel rooms were most expensive in Lapland: EUR 282, which is EUR 40 higher than in the year before. The average price of a hotel room was EUR 150 in the whole country.
