Nearly 7,000 motorists were caught over-speeding while the police conducted a round-the-clock surveillance across the country till Thursday morning.
The police intensified surveillance on over-speeding during an operation conducted on from Wednesday for 24 hours and issued warning in this regard beforehand.
Over 5000 incidents of over-speeding were recorded through automatic surveillance cameras which would result to penalties.
Automatic surveillance was carried out with the help of automatic poles and vehicle units.
The penalised group included private car drivers, motorcycle riders, lorry drivers etc.
Advance notification of the inspection did not seem to have a significant impact on the driving speeds.
The operation was part of a wider European traffic police inspection programme.
