Expansion work of Terminal T1 at Helsinki Airport is going on in full swing and if everything goes by the schedule, seven new departure gates will be opened for passengers next summer, said Finavia in a press release.

The authorities of Finavia, the company that operates the country’s airports, apologised to the passengers for any inconvenience created by the noise caused by the expansion work. Expansion of Terminal T1 will increase the airport’s capacity for handling passengers and cargo on European and domestic routes.

Transfer of passengers between the new seven gates and planes will take place on foot. The expansion work is taking place on two floors: departure gates 5-7 are on the ground floor, the apron floor, while gates 8-11 are on the first floor with an elevator and stair access to the apron.

According to the press release, in addition to expansion of Terminal T1, new spaces for passengers’ use will be made available at Terminal T2 in 2019.

Plaza, a central square to be built between the south and west piers slated to be opened in early 2019, will become the heart of the extension. The border control expansion will open by summer 2019. The first part of the west pier with its new gates for wide-body aircraft will also open that year.
