The use of winter tyres on vehicles may continue considering the situation, although, according to the law, April 20 Monday was the deadline for using studded tyres, said the National Police Board in a press release.
The police said studded tyres can also be used after that date, if road conditions require it.
During surveillance, the police will take into account the special circumstances caused by the coronavirus that might have complicated the change of tyres.
Winter tyres are compulsory in Finland from the first of December to the end of February, but may be used until April 20, if necessary.
The new law says winter tyres can be in use for a longer period – from November 1 to March 31 – but allows weather or transport conditions to determine if and when they are necessary.
The period for mandatory use of winter tyres in Finland will change from this June when the new transport legislation is scheduled to come into effect.
