At least 15 fighters including eight police and seven militants have been killed as a clash broke out in Chardara district of northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Thursday, a local security official Abdul Hadi Jamal said.

A group of Taliban fighters attacked security checkpoints around district headquarters in Chardara and police returned fire triggering gun battle leaving eight police and seven militants dead, the official said.

Six more militants and 10 security personnel have been injured, the official added, saying that the militants fled away after arrival of reinforcement to the area.

Taliban militants who are in control of major parts of the restive Chardara district are yet to make comment on the situation.
